EVANSTON, Ill. - The 1999 women?s soccer season was one filled with high drama, with a majority of the team?s matches undecided until the final minutes. Unfortunately for Northwestern, it was also a season filled with disappointment, as the Wildcats finished the campaign 4-12-1, 1-8-1 in the Big Ten.
After a thrilling 2-1 win over SMU pulled the ?Cats to .500, they proceeded to lose six consecutive games, the first five by one goal and many of those in heartbreaking fashion. They refused to get frustrated, however, and rebounded to win their final two matches of the season, including a stirring 1-0 overtime victory on Senior Day as Christie Molitor made her final appearance at Lakeside Field a memorable one by netting the winning goal.
Senior Kristen Palmer, who finished her career as Northwestern?s all-time leader in assists and second in points, led the team in scoring with 15 points (3 goals, 9 assists) and was named to the All-Big Ten first team.
Midfielder Erica Westrich also left her mark on the record book. The 1998 Big Ten Player of the Year graduates as the school?s all-time leader in shots and ranks third on the assist list and fifth in points. She was awarded All-Big Ten honors for the fourth consecutive year. Junior Brooke Bell finished the season strong and led the team with five goals.
