EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's swimming and diving team took second place at the inaugural Northwestern Invitational, while the men were third in the weekend-long, four-team event at the Norris Aquatics Center.
Arizona State swept the event, as the 14th-ranked Sun Devil men rolled to a 463-point victory over second-place SMU and the 21st-ranked women defeated the 10th-ranked Wildcats by 54 points. The NU women did nose out No. 6 SMU for the second spot, with 778 points to SMU's 680.
The Wildcat women had a pair of winners on Sunday. Freshman Susie Sample led a 1-2 NU finish in the day's first final, clocking 1:59.94 in the 200-yard backstroke to edge teammate Tashy Bohm (2:00.72). In the 100-yard freestyle, Courtney Allen swam 51.18 to nose out ASU's Sarah Baham.
Amy Balcerzak finished second in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.85), while Rachel Johnson was third in the 200 butterfly (2:04.22).
On the men's side, Steve Steketee was third in the 100-yard freestyle (45.36), Jason Merchant was fifth in the 200 butterfly (1:54.40). Among the divers, Elliott Massuda was fourth in the 1-meter (423.10) and fifth in the 3-meter (418.70).

WOMEN: Arizona State 832.50, Northwestern 778, SMU 680, Kansas 650.50.
