EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern jumped out to an 18-2 lead and was never threatened, capping a perfect 2-0 exhibition season by defeating Ukraine Select, 70-41. Sophomore Tavaras Hardy (Joliet, Ill./Providence) led the Wildcats with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Hardy and sophomore Steve Lepore (North Olmsted, Ohio/St. Edward) each scored six points in a 16-0 run as the ?Cats opened up a big early lead. Northwestern?s tough defense stymied any hopes of a Ukrainian comeback, limiting the vistiors to 19 percent field goal shooting in the first half. The ?Cats took a 36-14 lead into the locker room.

Northwestern put the game out of reach, opening the second half on a 16-2 run to open up their largest lead of the night, 52-16, with 14:35 remaining. Freshman Brody Deren (Harlan, Iowa/Harlan Community) scored seven of his nine points in the spurt.

Freshman Ben Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./De La Salle) added 13 points, eight rebounds, three assists and zero turnovers in 31 minutes.

The Wildcats will tip off the regular season next Tuesday, Nov. 23, hosting Chicago State at 7 p.m. in Welsh-Ryan Arena.
