Women's Swimming Opens Campaign with Win Over Indiana

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's swim team, ranked 10th in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) national poll, handily defeated Indiana, 173-120, to open the 1999-2000 campaign Saturday night at the Norris Aquatics Center.
The win also gave Wildcat head coach Jimmy Tierney bragging rights in his family. The NU mentor was going up against his younger sister, Dorsey, for the first time ever. Dorsey is in her second year as Indiana?s head coach.
Northwestern won all but three of the events it competed in Saturday, sweeping the top three spots in three of them. To nobody?s surprise, Courtney Allen swam to victory in the 50 and 100 freestyle events, while Amy Balcerzak won the 100 and 200 breaststroke and Tashy Bohm swept the 100 and 200 backstroke. Merritt Adams was also a double winner, capturing the 100 and 200 butterfly, while Hyun Soo Suh (1,000 freestyle) and Brianne Fowles (500 freestyle) also pulled out victories.
The Northwestern men?s and women?s swim teams will host the NU Relays Sunday afternoon at the Norris Aquatics Center, beginning at 12 noon.
