EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern University men?s and women?s swimming and diving teams will kick off the opening weekend of the 1999-2000 regular season with the NU Relays. The event will be held Sunday, Oct. 31, beginning at noon and continuing through much of the afternoon at the Norris Aquatics Center.

The Wildcat men and women will entertain Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Big Ten foe Michigan State, while Northern Illinois and Illinois-Chicago add local flavor to the event. On the women?s side, Indiana ? coached by Dorsey Tierney, the younger sister of Northwestern mentor Jimmy Tierney ? will also be in the mix.

?The Relays provide us with a chance to see where we are in our training,? said Jimmy Tierney, whose Wildcat women finished ninth at last year?s NCAA Championships and are ranked 10th in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) preseason national poll. ?It would obviously be nice if we can win, but we will use it more as a gauge of where we stand.?

Though it is still very early in the season, Tierney is excited to have two other Big Ten schools competing on the women?s side in the NU Relays.

?The Big Ten schools figure to be the class of the Relays, and it gives our athletes an idea of what is out there in the conference,? he said. ?But a lot of this event is about getting further along in our racing habits, seeing what the freshmen can do, and swimming some people in different events.?
