Men's Tennis Competes at Penn Classic

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern men's tennis team sent some athletes to the Penn Classic this past weekend. The event was hosted by the University of Pennsylvania and held in Philadelphia.
Joost Hol (Newport Beach, Calif./Foothill) entered the event as the No. 3 seed but advanced to the final before being defeated by Minnesota's Jorge Duenas (6-2, 7-6). On his way to the championship match, Hol defeated the No. 1 seed, Penn's Eric Sobotka (6-4, 6-3) in the second round of the tournament.
Ranked as the No. 4 seed in the tournament, Brad Erickson (Eugene, Ore./South Eugene) lost in the third round to Duenas (7-6, 6-4). Duenas proved a thorn in the side for Northwestern all tournament long, as he also defeated Jamie Sahara (Santa Maria, Calif./St. Joseph) in the semifinal round (6-3, 6-4). Josh Axler (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) was defeated by OSU's Chris Porter in the fourth round of competition.
Hol and Erickson teamed up for doubles competition and tore through the field before falling to the Ohio State duo of Chris Porter and Andrew Carlson and lost, 8-5.
The men will next be in action from Nov. 5-8 at the ITA Midwest Championships in Madison, Wisc.
