Women's Soccer Foiled by Penn State, 4-1

EVANSTON, Ill. - Penn State freshman Christie Welsh netted three goals Friday night, giving fifth-ranked Penn State a 4-1 win over Northwestern in women's soccer action. The match was played at State College.
The loss dropped the Wildcats to 2-11-1 overall (0-7-1 Big Ten), while PSU improved to 11-2-1 (7-0-1 Big Ten).
Welsh got the Nittany Lions on the board at the 13-minute mark, providing the only scoring in the first half. In the second half, she put the game away by beating Northwestern goalie Erin Ekeberg in the 57th minute and then an open-net goal three minutes after that.
Kris Phillips added a goal off a free kick at the 65:41 mark to make the score 4-0, before the Wildcats finally dented the net with 3:40 to play. Katie Hertz was the scorer for Northwestern.
Ekeberg made three saves as the starter in the Northwestern goal, while Susie McCreery finished up and was not called upon. For Penn State, Emily Oleksiuk and Megan Smart combined for a pair of saves.
Northwestern will be back in action Sunday, meeting Ohio State in another Big Ten match in Columbus.
