EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern men's soccer team engaged in a spirited battle with DePaul Wednesday afternoon on Lakeside Field, but came up on the short end of a 3-1 decision.
The loss dropped the Wildcats to 1-10 overall, while the Blue Demons improved to 6-6.
DePaul drew first blood when Northwestern scored an own goal. The tally was credited to the Blue Demons' Nate Grobe. However, the Wildcats drew level in the 36th minute when Jun Kim hammered home a corner kick from David DeHorn. At the half, the score was 1-1.
The second half saw DePaul go back up, when Matt Green converted a feed from Paul Escobar. Northwestern looked like it had again equalized when a free kick found its way into the goal, but offsides was called just before the ball went into the goal and the score remained 2-1. In the 74th minute, an almost exact replica of the play occured at the other end of the field, but this time there was no flag and Marcelo Dellavedova was credited with the tip-in.
Matt Keeler had six saves in the Northwestern goal, while Josh Chavero made five stops for DePaul.
Northwestern will be back in action on Sunday, hosting defending NCAA champion Indiana on Lakeside Field. Kickoff for that match will be 2 p.m.
