EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern field hockey team held a 1-0 lead through halftime Sunday at Michigan, but could not hang on and fell to the Wolverines, 2-1, at UM's Ocker Field.
The Wildcats fell to 4-8 (0-5 Big Ten), while Michigan raised its record to 10-4 (4-1 Big Ten).
Northwestern got on the board with 14:09 to play in the first half, when Jodie Condie scored with an assist going to Amy Haase. However, in the second half the Wolverines drew level when Erica Widder netted an unassisted goal with 27 minutes to play, and then nine minutes later Ali Balmer scored her first collegiate goal that proved to be the gamewinner.
Michigan outshot Northwestern, 16-6, and forced Courtney Perkins to make six saves in her first collegiate appearance in the goal. For the Wolverines, Kati Oakes had four stops.
Northwestern will be back in action Friday, meeting Penn State in State College. The Nittany Lions were ranked fifth in the latest national poll.
