EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern field hockey team fell to Penn State Friday night in State College, 6-1, as the Nittany Lions swept the season series from the Wildcats.

The loss dropped NU to 4-9 overall (0-6 Big Ten), while the third-ranked Nittany Lions improved to 13-2 (5-1 Big Ten).

Penn State held the play most of the way Friday, and scored the first two goals to gain an early advantage. Northwestern cut the deficit to 2-1 at the very end of the half, when Nicole Smith netted a shot.

However, that only served to wake up PSU, which scored twice in the first five minutes of the second stanza en route to a four-goal outburst that buried the Wildcats. The Nittany Lions were sparked by Lindsey Gehris, Traci Anselmo and Maegan Galie, each of whom had two goals.

Northwestern was outshot, 19-9, and goalkeeper Kendra Mesa ? making her collegiate debut in place of the injured Jessica Yates ? came up with six saves for the Wildcats.

Northwestern will be back in action Sunday in Columbus, Ohio, taking on 10th-ranked Ohio State.
