Matthew Lowe
  • Title:
    Assistant Coach (Swimming & Diving)
Northwestern director of swimming and diving Rachel Stratton-Mills announced the addition of Matthew Lowe to the swimming and diving coaching staff in August of 2025.

Lowe spent the last two seasons on the coaching staff at St. Bonaventure after working the previous season as the assistant coach and director of operations at Army West Point, where he helped the Black Knights to their first win over Navy in over 30 years.

Before his time at West Point, he spent five years as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Towson. The Tigers broke five school records during the 2021-22 season, including three men's relay records. The men's and women's teams both finished third at the CAA Championships with multiple event wins and best times posted throughout the season.

"We are thrilled to add Matthew to our coaching staff," Stratton-Mills said. "He brings valuable perspective from his experiences and success across multiple programs. I'm excited for the energy and expertise he'll bring to our student-athletes every day, and am confident he'll have an immediate impact on our program."

During his time on deck at Towson, the Tigers men's and women's teams broke 44 records, collected numerous top-10 times and set several freshman records for the program.

Lowe coached multiple national swimming prospects at Towson, notably USA National teamers Jack Saunderson and Brian Benzing. Saunderson qualified for the NCAA's in 2017, 2018 and 2019, racing the 100 fly, 200 fly, and the 200 IM. He was named an All-American and represented the United States at the World University Games in 2019. Benzing qualified for the NCAA's in 2022 in the 100 breast and earned an All-America Honorable Mention.

In addition to his coaching at Towson, Lowe was the head age group coach at the Loyola Blakefield Aquatics club during the 2017-18 season.

As a swimmer, Lowe was part of the Bahamian national team for several years and holds national records in the 800m freestyle, 1500m freestyle, and 400m medley relay. He was named to the World Championships team in 2013 and 2017 and competed at the Olympic Open Water Qualifier in Setubal, Portugal, in 2016.

He earned his bachelor's degree in Accounting from Towson University in 2015. While at Towson, he was a freshman record holder in the 1,000-yard freestyle and holds team records in the 500, 1000, and 1650-yard freestyle events. He was also conference champion in the 1650-yard freestyle in 2014 and 2015, and runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle in 2015.
