- Title:
- Assistant Coach
Hannah Murphy, a three-time IWLCA All-American and one of the best draw control specialists in NCAA history during her time at Massachusetts, joined the Northwestern lacrosse program as an assistant coach for the 2018 season.
In her first season as an assistant coach, the 'Cats finished with a 15-6 record and an NCAA quarterfinal appearance. Murphy's talent for the draw control helped senior Shelby Fredericks to round out her career as Northwestern's all-time leader in draw controls, with 136 on the season and 496 in her career. Fredericks also ranked fifth in the nation and first in the Big Ten in draw controls per game with 8.00.
For Murphy's 2017 senior campaign at UMass, she led the nation in draw controls with 212 – a total that stands as a UMass record, an Atlantic 10 record, and the third most in NCAA history for a single season. She also ranks third all-time in career draw controls (522), which also set a UMass record. She earned her third consecutive IWLCA All-Northeast Region honor in 2017 and was picked as the Atlantic 10 Midfielder of the Year for the third time as well. In the Atlantic 10 Championship tournament, Murphy was chosen as the A-10 Tournament MVP.
In addition to her draw control prowess, Murphy finished with 135 goals, 46 assists, 181 points, 147 ground balls and 64 caused turnovers in 84 career games. She led the Minutewomen to four-straight Atlantic 10 championships and NCAA Tournament appearances. UMass advanced past the first round in each of Murphy's four years on campus, claiming a pair of victories to advance to the quarterfinals in her junior season.
Murphy excelled at UMass under the coaching of Angela McMahon, a former two-time captain for the Wildcats who helped rebuild the program from 2001-03.
Murphy earned a communications degree and joins assistant coach Tim McCormack and volunteer assistant coach Scott Hiller as alums of UMass on the Northwestern lacrosse coaching staff.
