Luther Clement

Luther Clement joined the Wildcats as a volunteer assistant coach before the start of the 2016-17 season.
In Clement's first season with the sabre squad, his group finished 38-13 with a second place weapon group finish at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships. Seniors Cindy Oh, Julia Abelsky, and Alisha Gomez-Shah finished 5th, 7th, and 9th in all-time wins in program history, respectively. Gomez-Shah finished second in the individual fencing event at the MFC Championships while Abelsky and sophomore Maddy Curzon tied for third.
Clement will be working with an incoming sabre class of five freshmen ahead of the 2017-18 season.
Clement comes to Evanston from New York University with a strong background as a competitive fencer and coach. Clement fenced at St. John's University and was a three-time NCAA All-American from 2006-2008. He captained the team that finished second at the NCAA Championships in 2007, and that same year, he was named the East Coast Athletic Conference student-athlete of the year. Before Clement arrived at St. John's, he won the Under-20 World Cup in Germany in 2003.
After Clement graduated in 2008, he became the sabre coach at the Fencing Academy of South Jersey where he coached A to C level fencers.
In 2011, Clement became an instructor at the Fencers Club of New York City where he taught fencing to middle school students.
He joined New York University's fencing program as the men's and women's sabre team coach in 2012. He helped guide NYU to a 13th place finish at the NCAA Championships in 2015, the highest among all D-III schools.
Clement graduated from St. John's University in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a minor in Asian Studies.
