Eric Momberg was named the assistant coach of the Northwestern Fencing program before the 2016-17 season after former assistant coach Zach Moss took over head coaching duties.

In Momberg's first season as assistant coach, the Wildcats finished 33-14 overall with a second place finish at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships. The foil weapon group finished 36-14 and senior Stephanie Chan qualified for her second NCAA Championships. Sophomore Yvonne Chart also finished third in the individual foil competition at the MFC Championships. 

Momberg comes to Evanston with an extensive background as a competetive fencer and a coach. He attended the University of Nevada from 1997-2001 before going to F.F.E. Prevot for a year in 2002 to study foil and sabre. Momberg fenced competitively for ten years and finished 17th at the World Cup B in Denmark in 2005.

In 2005, Momberg became the head coach and owner of the High Desert Fencing Alliance club in Reno, Nevada, where he helped train athletes from a beginning to international level of competition. In 2006, Momberg also became an instructor for fencing classes at the University of Nevada along with advising the university fencing club. 

From 2011-2013, Momberg was the coach of Women's Sabre for Panama. He coached a bronze medal in individual women's sabre at the Pan Am Games in 2011 and an individual gold medal at the Central American Games. The team also competed at the 2013 World Championships.

Since 2005, Momberg's trainees have won over 60 medals in the North American Cup across all age groups, genders, divisions and weapons.

He has hosted numerous training camps across the country and abroad including a training camp in Tokyo, Japan, in 2007 and a camp at Northwestern in 2014.

Momberg graduated from the University of Nevada in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in anthropology and a minor in geography.
