Northwestern Returns To Action Friday At Chicagoland Championships

‘Cats to compete close to home in Elmhurst, Ill.

EVANSTON, Ill. (April 9, 2026) – After getting its outdoor season off to a flying start, Northwestern track will be in action close to home this Friday, making the short trek west to Elmhurst, Ill. for the Chicagoland Championships.
 
The Wildcats will open their stay at Elmhurst University's Langhorst Field by competing in the first section of the 5,000m run at 2 p.m. CT.  Northwestern will also be represented in the 3,000m steeplechase at 2:45 p.m. CT before wrapping up the afternoon at 3:25 p.m. CT with action in the 1,500m run.  A link to live results can be accessed above.
 
Northwestern enters the week ranked second nationally in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) 10,000m Event Squad Rankings after multiple standout showings at the Raleigh Relays on March 27.  
 
Ava Criniti led the way for the Wildcats' contingent in the Tar Heel State, surging to a program-record 33:19.10 which currently ranks eighth in the Big Ten Conference and 21st in the NCAA West Region.  Jackie Holman (33:32.10) and Maddy Whitman (33:58.28) turned in impressive efforts of their own en route to ascending inside the top five in program history with times that reside inside the top 48 on the regional leaderboard in the event.
 
Cary Drake finds herself ranked among the region's elite in the 5,000m run.  Drake clocked a personal-best 16:30.35, the eighth fastest time in program history, that has her sitting 47th regionally.
 
Olivia Capala, who is slated to compete in the 1,500m run on Friday, turned in a record-setting performance at the WashU Distance Carnival in St. Louis, Mo., where she posted the top outdoor 800m run time in program history, finishing in 2:11.69.
 
Northwestern will split its squad next week, with athletes set to compete at both the Bryan Clay Invitational (April 16-17) in Azusa, Calif. and the Gibson Invitational (April 17) in Terre Haute, Ind.
