EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern men's tennis did not drop a set in its completed matches on Saturday, claiming a pair of sweeps over Marquette and Illinois State in a doubleheader at home.
The Wildcats (9-2) won 24 of 29 doubles games (82.8%) during the day at Combe Tennis Center, now having claimed the doubles point in nine straight matches. Northwestern won all completed singles matches in straight sets.
"We're playing better and better doubles. I think each week it's gotten better, so that was exciting to see," Head Coach Arvid Swan said. "I thought that was a pretty concentrated effort across the board. It was good — two good matches in doubles and singles."
NU dominated the morning match against the Golden Eagles (1-8), 7-0. A strong doubles showing propelled Northwestern to take a 1-0 lead. Senior Chad Miller and sophomore Vincent Yang earned a 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles, and the No. 2 pairing of junior Cyrus Mahjoob and junior Ethan Schiffman followed suit with a 6-2 win to grant the doubles point for the 'Cats.
Miller, playing at No. 4 singles, was the first to finish with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. He recorded his third 6-0 set of the season.
"He's done an amazing job. He's worked really hard to get to this spot where he's playing and how he's playing," Swan said. "It's not only very good tennis, but it's playing with a ton of positivity."
Shortly after, Yang logged a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 5 position, and Mahjoob clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 2 singles.
Wins piled on for the Wildcats. Sophomore Carter Pate, at No. 1, turned in a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory. Schiffman triumphed 6-1, 7-5, at No. 3, and first-year Cooper Han's 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win at the No. 6 position secured the 7-0 sweep.
In its return to the court to face the Redbirds (3-4), Northwestern's momentum carried on for a 4-0 win. The No. 3 doubles duo of Miller and Yang tabbed their second win of the day with a 6-0 result. Shortly after, Pate and sophomore Greyson Casey claimed four consecutive games to register a 6-2 victory at No. 1.
With the team's recent doubles dominance, Swan is pleased with where his doubles pairings stand.
"You're always evaluating and looking at what we're doing and who should play where, but right now, the lineup has worked well recently in doubles," Swan said.
The Wildcats took a 2-0 advantage into singles, as Northwestern received a walkover point at the No. 6 singles position. No. 5 Miller was the first 'Cat to complete his match once again, prevailing 6-1, 6-1.
In Miller's last five completed matches, he has dropped just 13 singles games. He credited his movement to what has helped him excel lately.
"I'm playing my best when I'm moving my feet well and using my legs, so those were kind of the main focus points today," Miller said.
In a similar fashion to the match against Marquette, Mahjoob — who moved up to play at the No. 1 position for the afternoon match — then clinched the match for NU with a 6-2, 6-1 scoreline.
Northwestern has now won nine consecutive matches for the first time since the 2017 dual season. Yet, the team knows not to get ahead of itself.
"It feels really good," Miller said. "We've had two good road wins, and we get to try to go back it up on Friday against Notre Dame. We have a lot of strong teams left, Big Ten season coming up, so [we] just got to keep pushing."
The Wildcats' road match against Notre Dame on Friday, Feb. 20, is slated for 6:30 p.m. CT. The team will then return home on Sunday, Feb. 22, for a match against Denver at noon CT inside Combe Tennis Center.
