NU Dominates at UChicago, Sets Pool, Personal Records

EVANSTON, Ill. - Visiting the University of Chicago, the Northwestern men's and women's swimming and diving teams resumed their 2025-26 seasons, starting the New Year with victory on Saturday.
The No. 25-ranked men's squad claimed a win after defeating the Maroons, 222-76. The No. 21 women's team, which recently returned to the national rankings, also took down UChicago 247-45, claiming at least the top two finishes in each event.
Ten Wildcats claimed personal bests, setting the tone for NU's dominant performance. On the men's side, Oliver Feng, Stuart Seymour, Jack Doyle and Josh Staples improved their individual records. Teya Nikolova and Zoe Nordmann highlighted the day for the women's team, joined by Sydney Smith, Lindsay Ervin, Hana Shimizu-Bowers and Kayla Rodriguez, with personal best marks.
The neighborly meet began with the 200 medley relay. NU's Grey Davis, Nikolova, Ekaterina Nikonova and Ervin finished first, breaking a pool record in 1:38.59. The men's quartet also took first, as Seymour, Staples, Oli Kos and Connor Schuster claimed another facility best in 1:25.15.
Smith clocked her new personal best in the 1000 free, earning second place behind Madeleine Simmons. In the 100 back, Ervin posted a 54.52 finish in first, with Shimizu-Bowers not far behind in third at 56.12, both claiming personal records.
Nikolova made her mark in the 100 breast, posting a pool record, personal best, and first-place finish in 1:01.16, good for 16th in the conference. The men swept the top finishes in the event, claiming spots one through four.
In the 200 fly, Nordmann clocked a 2:00.21 personal best finish, atop the podium. Feng joined the personal best 'Cats after his performance in the 50 free, posting a 20.50 finish for second place.
Seymour and Doyle earned first and second place in the 200 back, claiming personal records in 1:43.95 and 1:48.19, respectively. The 200 breast was headlined by Rodriguez on the women's side and Staples on the men's. Rodriguez swam a 2:14.39 for a pool record, while Staples posted a 1:54.93 finish for a personal best, good for 11th in the Big Ten.
On the boards, Isabella Chen earned first in the three-meter and second in the one-meter dives. Adam Cohen claimed first in both events.
After taking two victories in Chicago, the Wildcats will return to action on Jan. 17, back home in Evanston, for Senior Day. The Big Ten meet, hosting Wisconsin, will begin at 4 p.m. CT.
