NEWARK, Del. - Tallying its fifth shutout of the season, the No. 1 Northwestern field hockey team (7-0) notched a 4-0 victory at Delaware (2-4) on Friday afternoon. The Wildcats' offense was led by junior Ilse Tromp, who claimed her first-career hat trick in the road win.
Extending its regular season win streak to 41, Northwestern dominated the first quarter to earn its seventh victory of the 2025 campaign. Remaining undefeated, the 'Cats dominated the field, outdoing the Blue Hens in shots (30-5), shots on goal (15-3) and corners (15-1).
Despite Delaware goalkeeper Kristi Merashoff recording a career-high 11 saves, NU clicked into gear in the matinee, with nine different 'Cats taking shots.
Northwestern got to work early, scoring on its first two attacking penalty corners to open the game. The first was inserted by Ashley Sessa in the fifth minute and stopped by Aerin Krys, setting Tromp up for her first goal of the game. Less than two minutes later, another penalty corner push extended NU's lead. Grace Schulze got the ball in motion, passing to Krys, who set up Tromp once again.
In the 11th minute, Schulze stayed on the ball after several 'Cats shots, and was able to bury the rebound and notch her sixth goal of the season. Now with a 3-0 Northwestern lead after the first 15 minutes, the matchup went scoreless through the next two quarters.
In the final period, NU goalkeeper Juliana Boon grabbed back-to-back saves, keeping the Blue Hens off the board. The 'Cats would take five more penalty corners in the last 15 minutes. In the 51st minute, Tromp put away her third goal of the day for her first career hat trick.
Schulze had the second-most points on the day for NU, with one goal and one assist. Krys notched two assists, extending her point streak to eight games, dating back to last season. Redshirt first-year Boon posted three saves, facing three shots on goal, to collect her fifth shutout.
With the victory, the 'Cats tied up the all-time series against Delaware, now 2-2.
Up next, Northwestern heads to Villanova for an 11 a.m. CT game time on Sunday, Sept. 21, streamed on ESPN+.
