Taylor Sets NCAA Tournament Goals Record, No. 2 Northwestern Advances to Quarterfinals

5/11/2025 5:00:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

EVANSTON, Ill. – Madison Taylor's NCAA Tournament-record 10 goals lifted No. 2 Northwestern (17-2) to an emphatic 15-7 win over No. 13 Michigan in the NCAA Tournament Second Round on Sunday afternoon at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium.

Taylor's outburst broke former Wildcat Selena Lasota's (nine goals) previous record for most goals in an NCAA Tournament game, which was set on May 11, 2018, in the first round against Richmond. Her 10 goals tied the program's single-game goal benchmark previously set by Izzy Scane, who did so twice, most recently on Feb. 16, 2023, against Notre Dame. The junior attacker now has 99 goals this season, which ties Scane's single-season (2023) school and Big Ten record.

The Tewaaraton Award Finalist, USA Lacrosse First Team All-American and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, has 17 hat tricks this season and has scored at least six goals in a game nine times. Her 99 goals are also four shy of Abby Hormes' 2022 NCAA single-season record of 103, set at High Point.

Taylor got things started with a pair of goals 1:29 apart to stake the 'Cats to a 2-0 lead just 2:21 in. The Wolverines got on the board at the 10:30 mark when Emma Bradbury converted a centering feed from Kaylee Dyer, but Northwestern countered with another Taylor goal 1:47 later to regain the two-goal bulge and complete Taylor's first-quarter hat trick.

Taylor found Taylor Lapointe for her 19th goal of the season 55 seconds into the second half, though Julia Schwabe cut the gap to 6-4 2:17 later. From there, the Wantagh, N.Y., native took the game over, going on a personal 5-0 scoring run. She netted a pair of free position goals and converted two Munro feeds amidst her onslaught to balloon the lead to 11-4 in the final minute of the third. Niki Miles closed the third-quarter scoring to make it 12-4 after 45 minutes.

After UM made it 12-5 early in the fourth, NU scored three-straight goals to bump its run to 9-1 with Abby LoCascio and LaPointe striking and Taylor tying Scane's record to initiate a running clock with 5:01 left to put the game away.

Taylor's 11 points matched her career high, set against Oregon on April 13. Lapointe (2 goals 1 assist), Munro (3 assists) and Miles (1 goal, 1 assist) also chipped in multi-point games for Northwestern.

The Wildcats forced the Wolverines to commit 18 turnovers, with Sammy White and Emerson Bohlig causing three each. Smith led all players with nine draw controls as NU controlled the circle to the tune of a 15-10 clip. Delaney Sweitzer was stellar in goal, stopping eight of 15 shots to improve to 15-2 on the season.

Northwestern improved to a perfect 34-0 at home in NCAA Tournament games under head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller.

Northwestern has advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the seventh straight season and will host No. 12 Penn at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium on Thursday, May 15, at 11 a.m. CT. The game will air on ESPNU.
