Women's Tennis Sweeps Penn State to Wrap Up Weekend

EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 47 Northwestern women's tennis (11-11, 4-6 Big Ten) completed the weekend with a 4-0 sweep over No. 42 Penn State on Sunday afternoon in Combe Tennis Center. The victory came in the 'Cats' second match of the weekend, after they fell to No. 11 Ohio State, 4-0, on Friday evening.

Sunday's matchup with the Nittany Lions (13-7, 4-6 Big Ten) belonged to the Wildcats from start to finish. Kiley Rabjohns and Erica Jessel opened the action with a 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles, then Britany Lau and Mika Dagan Fruchtman clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory at the No. 1 spot.

The 'Cats' success continued on into the singles portion of the match, with all three singles wins coming in straight sets. Autumn Rabjohns was perfect on court six, picking up a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kate Zink. Sydney Pratt improved to 14-2 in dual season singles play with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles, and Lau provided match point with her 7-5, 6-0 win at the No. 2 spot.

The victory over Penn State was good for Northwestern's third 4-0 sweep in Big Ten play this season, after the 'Cats previously accomplished the feat against Oregon and then-No. 58 Nebraska.

Prior to Sunday's victory, the 'Cats battled Ohio State (15-2, 9-1 Big Ten) to open the weekend's action. Though the Buckeyes won the doubles point, Lau and Dagan Fruchtman notched a top-ten upset at No. 1 doubles, where the pair beat No. 10 Luciana Perry and Teah Chavez, 7-5.

In singles play, Ohio State won the match with victories at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 positions. In the abandoned matches, both Neena Feldman and Autumn Rabjohns were even with their opponents at a set apiece. At No. 1 singles, Jessel battled back from a 5-7 set-one defeat to a 6-5 advantage in the second set against No. 37 Chavez.

The 'Cats will be back in action next weekend, as they close out their home schedule with an in-state rivalry matchup against Illinois on Senior Day. Northwestern will take on the Illini at noon CT on Saturday, April 12, with a Senior Day brunch and ceremony to precede the dual.
