Three-time All-Southern Conference pick to join ‘Cats for 2025-26 season
EVANSTON, Ill. (April 22, 2025) – Tate Walters (Buford, Ga./Buford/Furman), a 5-foot-9 guard who spent the last five seasons at Furman University, will join the Northwestern University women's basketball program for the 2025-26 season, Wildcats' head coach Joe McKeown announced on Tuesday.
"We are thrilled to welcome Tate Walters to Northwestern for her final season of college basketball following a decorated career at Furman," McKeown commented. "She brings toughness, skill, and a high basketball IQ that will pay immediate dividends for our program. I'm excited to see what Tate will accomplish both on and off the court as a Wildcat!"
A three-time All-Southern Conference (SoCon) honoree during her time with the Paladins, Walters averaged 11.4 points and 4.1 assists across 111 appearances. The Buford, Ga. native closed her time in the Palmetto State with 1,268 career points, a mark that ranks 14th on the program's career scoring chart. Walters also sits second all-time in assists at Furman, having dished out 453 helpers.
Following a debut season that saw her average 9.3 points and 4.3 assists in 2020-21 en route to earning SoCon All-Freshman Team honors, Walters started in all 32 games for Furman as a sophomore, scoring in double figures 20 times. She put up 12.9 points per game and 4.3 assists per game on the way to being named a Second Team All-SoCon selection.
After missing her junior season due to a knee injury, Walters returned to the floor in 2023-24, appearing in 26 contests as she averaged 10.0 points and 4.1 assists. She closed her time with the Paladins in style this past season, contributing 12.5 points per game across 32 appearances, all of which came in a starting role, to collect Second Team All-SoCon distinction. Walters put up 10-plus points 25 times, a collection highlighted by a career-best 30-point outburst in an 82-73 win over Western Carolina on January 16.
Prior to her time at Furman, Walters was a member of four straight state championship teams at Buford High School in Buford, Ga. Playing under the direction of head coach Gene Durden, Walters was named the AAAAA North Player of the Year by the Georgia Coaches Association (GACA) as a senior, in addition to being tabbed the Gwinnett County Tip-Off Club Player of the Year.
