3/7/2025 12:09:00 PM | Men's Basketball

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern men's basketball will play its final regular season game in 2024-25 as it travels to College Park to face No. 13 Maryland for the second time this year on Saturday, March 8 at 2 p.m. CT. The game will air on Peacock with Noah Eagle (play-by-play) and Stephen Bardo (analyst) on the call and WGN Radio 720 and SiriusXM Channel 391 with Dave Eanet (play-by-play) and Billy McKinney (analyst).

Junior Nick Martinelli is second in the Big Ten in scoring and ranks 22nd nationally, averaging 19.9 points per game this season. He leads all high-major players playing 37.5 minutes per game, the most by a high-major player since Buddy Boeheim (Syracuse) played 38.0 minutes per game in 2021-22. Martinelli is coming off a week where he earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors, as he averaged 22.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game on 47.1% shooting from the field while the Wildcats went 2-0.

Martinelli ranks third in the country in scoring by high-major forwards, trailing only the nation's scoring leader Eric Dixon (23.6, Villanova) and Maxime Raynaud (20.2, Stanford). Martinelli leads the Big Ten with 27 games of 15+ points and has scored 15+ points in 15 straight contests, the longest by a Northwestern player since at least 1996. It also stands as the longest active streak of 15+ point games by a high-major player nationally. Martinelli has scored in double digits in 23 straight games, which is the longest streak by a Wildcat since 2000.

The 6-foot-7 forward ranks second in the program's single-season field goals made leaderboard with 224, trailing only John Shurna (2011-12, 228). He also ranks fourth in the program's single-season points leaderboard with 598. He is 22 points away from John Shurna's 2009-10 season with 619 points to move into third all-time.

Over his last six games, graduate student Ty Berry is averaging 16.6 points and 5.0 rebounds per game on 50.0% shooting from the field and 41.9% shooting from beyond the arc. It is the highest scoring six-game stretch of his career. Berry has played 140 career games, the third most in program history, and he ranks fifth in career 3-pointers made with 250 and is tied for sixth in career steals with 159.

First-year K.J. Windham is averaging 12.2 points and 3.2 assists over his last five games, converting 44.8% of his shots from beyond the arc. The Indianapolis, Ind. product has scored 15+ points in three of the last six contests and 10+ points in three of his last four.

Graduate student Matthew Nicholson ranks eighth in the Big Ten this season, blocking 1.3 shots per game. The Clarkston, Mich. native is one rejection away from becoming the first player in school history to record three seasons of 40 or more blocks.

Over the last four seasons from 2021-25, Northwestern has won 38 Big Ten games, equaling the stretch from 1930-34 (38) as the most of a four-season period in school history.

Northwestern is 10-0 this season when holding its opponent to 65 or fewer points.

As a team, the Wildcats are averaging 9.7 turnovers lost per game, which is the fewest in the Big Ten, and ranks 20th fewest nationally. Northwestern ranks third in the Big Ten and 21st nationally with a turnover margin of +3.6.

The Wildcats are forcing an average of 13.3 turnovers per game, which ranks fifth in the conference. It's the program's highest average since forcing 14.9 turnovers per game in 2008-09. Northwestern ranks sixth in the Big Ten in steals, averaging 7.2 per game. Northwestern has averaged over 7+ steals per game in each of the last three seasons, the first time it has done that since 2006-09.

The Wildcats are averaging 11.0 offensive rebounds per game, which ranks fourth in the Big Ten. It is the program's highest average in a season since 1996-97 (11.9).

In a game that featured 14 lead changes, Northwestern's 13-0 run in the final three minutes came up just short, as it fell to UCLA 73-69 inside Welsh-Ryan Arena on Monday night (March 3).

Berry, playing his final contest inside Welsh-Ryan Arena, notched a game-high 22 points, seven rebounds, and three steals while knocking down 7-of-13 shots from the field and 4-of-9 threes. Berry became the first Northwestern player since at least 2005-06 to tally 20+ points, 7+ rebounds, 4+ threes, and 3+ steals in a game.

Northwestern has won three straight games and five of the last seven games against Maryland (23-7, 13-6 Big Ten). The teams last faced off earlier this season inside Welsh-Ryan Arena on Jan. 16, where Northwestern won 76-74 in overtime after Martinelli hit a game-winning baseline jump shot to cap off his 22-point evening. Senior Brooks Barnhizer stuffed the stat sheet with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists, while Berry scored 15 points off the bench. The Wildcats are looking to win two consecutive road games at Maryland for the first time in program history.

Since their loss to Northwestern in mid-January, the Terrapins have posted a 10-2 record, with both setbacks coming by three points. Maryland has the Big Ten's third best and nation's 24th ranked offense, scoring 81.8 points per game. Five Terrapins average 12+ points per game: Derik Queen (15.9), Ja'Kobi Gillespie (14.8), Rodney Rice (13.8), Julian Reese (13.0), and Selton Miguel (12.1). Maryland's +3.7 turnover margin ranks second in the conference and 19th nationally.

The league's top 15 teams qualify for the upcoming Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament which takes place at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. from Wednesday, March 12 through Sunday, March 16.
