PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The No. 20 seed at 157 lbs, graduate student Trevor Chumbley finished fourth in the nation at the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships, earning All-American honors for the first time in his career. Chumbley tallied four upset victories - including two over single-digit seeds - en route to his podium finish.
Wrestling in his third consecutive NCAA Championships, Chumbley opened his weekend with a pair of victories on Thursday. In the morning session, he ground out a 2-0 decision over No. 13 Jared Hill (Wyoming) to advance on in the Championship bracket. That victory earned him a meeting with fourth-seeded Rafael Hipolito (Virginia Tech) in the evening session. After trading escapes during regulation, the foes remained knotted at one apiece all the way to tiebreakers, where a penalty point and a ride-out secured the second upset victory of Chumbley's day.
The St. Charles, Ill., native picked up right where he left off with his quarterfinal matchup on Friday afternoon. Faced with 12th-seeded Caleb Fish (Oklahoma State), Chumbley staged a thrilling comeback to secure a 6-4 decision and lock in his spot on the NCAA podium. The deciding takedown came with less than 30 seconds left in the bout, sending Chumbley to the national semifinals in thrilling fashion.
Following a close 4-2 loss to eighth-seeded Joey Blaze (Purdue), Chumbley resumed action on Saturday morning, looking to climb the podium. His first match of the day resulted in his fourth upset, as he knocked off No. 7 Vinny Zerban (Northern Colorado) in a 5-3 decision that earned Chumbley a spot in the third-place match. Despite falling to top-seeded Tyler Kasak (Penn State) in his final match, Chumbley became the first Wildcat to finish fourth or higher at an NCAA Championships since Ryan Deakin's National Championship in 2022, and just the third 157-pounder to finish fourth or higher in Northwestern program history.
Also representing the 'Cats at the Championships, Maxx Mayfield picked up a pair of wins at 165 lbs, highlighted by a 7-6 upset decision over No. 15 Nicco Ruiz (Arizona State) in first-round action. At 197 lbs, Evan Bates rounded out the trio of 'Cats to earn first-round victories, picking up a clutch decision against Stanford's Nick Stemmet in the Thursday morning session.
