'Cats Sweep Huskers as Part of Weekend Split

3/16/2025 4:23:00 PM | Women's Tennis

EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 38 Northwestern women's tennis (9-7, 2-2 Big Ten) defeated No. 58 Nebraska decisively on Friday evening at Combe Tennis Center, sweeping the Huskers 4-0. The win was part of a 1-1 weekend at home for the 'Cats, who fell to No. 49 Iowa on Sunday.

The 'Cats won the first lead of Friday's match, taking two of three doubles courts to get up to an early 1-0 advantage on Nebraska (10-5, 0-4 Big Ten). Kiley Rabjohns and Britany Lau put together a quick 6-1 victory at the No. 3 position, then Sydney Pratt and Neena Feldman closed out a dramatic match at the No. 2 spot, winning five straight games to turn a 5-2 deficit into a 7-5 win.

Already on top, Northwestern continued to impress in singles action against the Huskers. Pratt was up a set already when her opponent retired due to injury, resulting in a 2-0 'Cats lead. Lau was the next to add on for Northwestern with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 2 position - her first appearance for the Wildcats in the top third of the lineup. From there, Feldman closed it out with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles, securing the 4-0 sweep over Nebraska.

In the weekend finale, Iowa (9-4, 3-1 Big Ten) and Northwestern opened Sunday's match with a tightly contested doubles point. Both sides picked up one quick victory each - Northwestern's from Rabjohns and Lau - leaving the match's first point down to No. 2 doubles, where Feldman and Pratt battled Daianne Hayashida and Marisa Schmidt. The Hawkeyes eventually edged out a 7-5 victory, earning a 1-0 team lead in the match.

Singles play was just as competitive, with the teams matching each other point-for-point through the first four matches. Pratt evened the score with a win in straight sets on court four, but Iowa's Hayashida picked up a victory at No. 2 singles to give the Hawkeyes the lead back. Rabjohns was next to the finish line, however, winning a 6-4, 6-1 match at the No. 5 spot to knot the match back up, this time at two apiece.

With three courts left to play, Autumn Rabjohns gave the 'Cats their first lead of the afternoon, winning a 7-5 tiebreak in the second set to notch her first career singles victory in Big Ten play. The advantage was short-lived, as Iowa gained the advantage back for good shortly after with wins at both the No. 3 and No. 1 positions, securing a 4-3 team victory over Northwestern.

All even in Big Ten action, Northwestern will continue conference play next weekend at home. The 'Cats will host No. 19 Washington on Saturday, March 22, at noon CT. Their homestand will conclude with a Monday evening meeting with Oregon, scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. CT.
