Junior picks up a pair of event titles

CHICAGO, Ill. (February 8, 2025) – Skye Ellis set a new program record in the 800m run to highlight a day that saw the junior win a pair of events as Northwestern cross country competed close to home this afternoon at the Blue Demon Alumni Classic in Chicago, Ill.

Ellis turned in a scintillating performance at the Dr. Conrad Worrill Track & Field Center en route to posting the top 800m run time in Wildcat annals.  The Jan Juc, Australia native shaved four seconds off her previous top effort in the event, racing through in 2:10.23 to edge UIC's Alessia Sarussi (2:10.49) for the top spot on the leaderboard.

Ellis' showing in the 800m run punctuated an afternoon that saw her open competition with a near record-setting effort in the mile run, where she was victorious in 4:40.80, a time just four one-hundredths of a second off the program record.  The pairing of Ava Earl and Maddy Whitman, both of whom ran unattached, finished inside the top 10 with Ellis.  Earl placed third overall in 4:45.36, with Whitman coming in eight seconds back in seventh at 4:53.32.

Jackie Holman led the attack as the 'Cats closed out the day in 3,000m run.  Competing unattached, Holman, out of San Francisco, Calif., ran 26 seconds ahead of her top collegiate effort in the event, clocking in at 9:25.05 to secure a runner-up finish.  Katherine Hessler shaved 14 seconds off her three-week-old personal best, surging through in 9:34.54 to claim sixth and move to seventh all-time at Northwestern.  Cary Drake, who also competed unattached, joined Holman and Hessler inside the top 10, finishing eighth in 9:38.15, while Kailey Zagst bested her week-old personal best by nearly 20 seconds as she came in 15th at 9:59.83.

Northwestern wraps up the indoor portion of its track schedule on Saturday, February 15 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston, Mass.
