Both members of duo climb program record board in 5,000m run

BOSTON, Mass. (February 15, 2025) – Chloe Wellings and Katherine Hessler ascended the program record board in the 5,000m run as Northwestern cross country closed out the indoor portion of its track schedule this afternoon at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston, Mass.

Wellings was outstanding in leading the 'Cats at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center.  Out of Newcastle upon Tyne, England, Wellings posted a near nine-second overall personal best, racing through in 16:13.47.  The graduate student's effort, which was nearly 38 seconds better than her previous top indoor showing in the event, sees her move to third all-time in Wildcat annals in the 5,000m run.

Hessler was just as impressive when she stepped on the track.  The Grand Rapids, Mich. product took just under 11 seconds off her previous 5,000m run personal best, as she surged across in 16:30.55 to secure a heat victory and climb to fifth on the program's all-time record board.

For the second time in a month, Holly Smith set a new 3,000m run personal best.  The Cheshire, England native led the way for Northwestern in the event, crossing in 9:19.49 to shave just under a second off her previous top time.

A select group of 'Cats also competed unattached this weekend at Wisconsin's Windy City Invitational on Chicago's South Side.  Jackie Holman turned in a dominant showing en route to winning the women's 5,000m run.  Holman raced though in 16:14.49, a time 34 seconds faster than her current collegiate personal best.  She defeated her next closest competitor by 16 seconds on the way to finishing atop the leaderboard.

Ava Earl saw action in the 3,000m run invite, where she brought home a runner-up finish in 9:15.31.  Competing in the unseeded section of the 3,000m run, Maddy Whitman ran over 20 seconds faster than her top collegiate time in the event, placing sixth overall at 9:33.80.

Northwestern will be back on the track in March to begin the outdoor portion of its schedule.
