‘Cats Take Second, Put 16 On Podium At CCFC Championships

Chan Nok Sze, Hild bring home runner-up finishes
DETROIT, Mich. (February 25, 2025) – 16 Wildcats collected podium finishes as No. 5 Northwestern fencing placed second overall at the Central Collegiate Fencing Conference (CCFC) Championships this past weekend in Detroit, Mich.
The 'Cats opened their stay inside the Matthaei Center with a dominant 25-2 win over Detroit Mercy, an effort highlighted by a 9-0 showing from their foil squad. Following a 21-6 victory against event host Wayne State, Northwestern's foilists turned in another spotless record in a 23-4 triumph over Cleveland State.
After racing past Lawrence, 24-3, a showing that included a 9-0 win in epee, Northwestern cruised to a 23-4 win over Denison to set the stage for a showdown with No. 5 Ohio State for the team title.
In their clash with the Buckeyes, the Wildcats' epee and sabre teams each came out victorious by 5-4 scorelines to secure conference titles, as Ohio State ultimately edged Northwestern, 14-13, to claim the overall league crown. Northwestern's foil squad came away with runner-up honors in the weapon.

Sunday's individual competition featured runner-up showings by a pair of first-years, Daphne Chan Nok Sze and Nisha Hild, both of whom made their postseason debuts over the weekend. Competing in the foil, Chan Nok Sze tallied a pair of wins in the tableau, while Hild matched her in the sabre, coming away with two wins of her own.
Chan Nok Sze's effort in the foil was part of an impressive overall showing for Northwestern, one that saw six 'Cats finish on the podium, a group that included Yejine Lee (T-3rd), Allison Lee (5th), Karina Vasile (6th), Rowan Park (7th), and Yukari Takamizawa (8th).
Hild led a group of five Wildcats inside the top seven in the sabre. Adele Bois and Kira Erikson shared third place, while Megumi Oishi and Alex Chen placed fifth and seventh, respectively.
Northwestern also put five on the podium in the epee. Christina Liu led the way, tying for third, with Amanda Pirkowksi following in fifth place. Emma Ning (6th), Karen Wang (7th), and Anna Damratoski (8th) rounded out the top eight.
