Northwestern Crushes Colorado 20-5, Taylor Nets Six for Northwestern

2/21/2025 9:24:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 3 Northwestern (4-1) continued its dominant start to the 2025 season with a commanding 20-5 victory over No. 25 Colorado (0-3) at Ryan Fieldhouse on Friday night. Junior sensation Madison Taylor led the charge with six goals and an assist, marking her third six-goal performance of the season. Graduate transfer Riley Campbell made her mark with three goals and an assist in her return to action.
The Wildcats wasted no time seizing control. Less than a minute into the game, Jordan Miles opened the scoring with an assist from Campbell. Taylor quickly followed up, converting a man-up opportunity, as Northwestern stormed to a 6-0 lead by the end of the first period. Goals from Niki Miles and Taylor Lapointe, making her first career start, helped build an early cushion.

Northwestern's relentless attack continued in the second period, highlighted by a Miles-to-Miles connection—Niki setting up Jordan for another goal. Taylor added two free-position strikes to push the Wildcats' lead to 12-1 at halftime. Colorado's Emily Dodd finally broke through in the second quarter for the Buffs, but the Wildcats' offensive firepower proved too much to handle.
Defensively, Sammy White anchored a stellar backline with four ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Grace Fujinaga contributed two ground balls and a caused turnover. Northwestern's transition game was exceptional, turning defense into offense seamlessly. In goal, Delaney Sweitzer recorded four saves before Francesca Argentieri and Cara Nugent rotated in to help lock down a stout defensive effort that held Colorado to just five goals.
Statistically, Northwestern outshot Colorado 30-13, with a 26-11 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams tallied six saves, but the Wildcats' pressure forced 17 turnovers from Colorado while committing just 13. Northwestern excelled in transition, completing 20 of 21 clears. They dominated on the ground, scooping up 18 ground balls compared to the Buffs' 11. The Wildcats also edged out Colorado in draw controls, 15-14, and converted six of their 10 free-position opportunities, while the Buffs managed just two of four.
