Chumbley Collects Fifth B1G Victory as 'Cats Fall to Hawkeyes

IOWA CITY, Iowa - No. 9 Trevor Chumbley picked up his fifth Big Ten dual match victory of the season on Sunday afternoon in Carver-Hawkeye Arena as the 'Cats (4-7, 2-6 Big Ten) fell to the No. 3 Iowa Hawkeyes (13-1, 7-1 Big Ten), 37-3, in their regular-season finale.
The match began at 157 lbs, where Chumbley faced off with Iowa's Miguel Estrada in a tight opening bout. After a scoreless first period, Chumbley was first on the board with an escape in the second. The advantage only held through the beginning of the third, however, when Estrada logged an escape of his own to even the match at one apiece. After neither wrestler was able to land a shot in the period's final seconds, the bout headed to overtime.
With a minute gone by in the two-minute sudden victory period, Chumbley finally secured the match's first and only takedown, winning by a final score of 4-1.
The victory improved Chumbley to 8-3 on the season, 7-1 in dual action and 5-1 in Big Ten conference duals. His only dual defeat came at the hands of No. 8 Tommy Askey against Minnesota on January 28. Chumbley's No. 9 ranking in the InterMat poll ties the highest of his career, first reached during the 2023 dual season.
Chumbley and the 'Cats will be back in action in three weeks at the Big Ten Tournament, which will be hosted at home in Welsh-Ryan Arena from March 8-9. Tickets are still available and can be purchased here.
