In his postgame press conference on Saturday afternoon, Sullivan-Ubben Head Men's Basketball Coach Chris Collins announced that senior Brooks Barnhizer would be out for the remainder of the season with a foot injury.
Barnhizer averaged 17.1 points (8th in Big Ten, 8.8 boards (4th), 4.2 assists (10th), 2.3 steals (2nd) and 1.1 blocks (14th) per game this season. Only four other players have posted single-season numbers of at least 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals, and one block per game since 1947-48: Matt Rafferty (Furman, 2018-19), Penny Hardaway (Memphis State, 1992-93), Ron Harper (Miami (OH), 1985-86), and Larry Bird (Indiana State, 1976-77).
He posted nine double-doubles on the campaign, which is tied for fourth most in a season in program history. He registered seven straight double-doubles from Nov. 29, 2024-Jan. 2, 2025, which is tied for the longest streak in the nation this season and is believed to be the most by a Wildcat all-time and the most since three-time All-Big Ten First Team selection Evan Eschmeyer had six straight in 1997. Barnhizer led the nation with five 20+ point, 10+ rebound, 5+ assist games this season. He led the Big Ten with eight 20+ point, 10+ rebound performances.
Here's what Collins had to say about Barnhizer:
"I love that kid. Not seeing him be able to get out there today just sucks, but we're gonna play our butts off for him, and he's gonna be better for it. A lot of times in life, you find the most about yourself when things are crappy, and he's going through that. He's had an unfair year. He had set everything up to have this be the best year yet and to lead this program and to take us to new heights, and to just have the injuries just derail that, it's unfair. But it's part of life, and he's going to be stronger for it."
"My main thing with him the whole time was when it is over, let's know we emptied the tank. And we did. There's no regrets. He gave it all to this program."
"I just loved watching him play because he was so wrapped up in competing. He just battled, and he made mistakes. No one's a perfect player, but he'd run through the wall for you. He'd run through the wall for a teammate."
"When we went home after (his recruiting visit), he made this — and I still have it in my office, pretty special — he went home and he drew this picture of Kobe's Laker uniform. He framed it, and he sent it to me. He just said, 'When I saw your passion and how much you cared, that's when I knew I wanted to play for you.' I thought about that this morning. I just hate it for that kid, what he's going through. I wish I could take on the broken foot so he could play 10 more games. I really wish I could, but that's not how life works. It's not always fair."
