ANN ARBOR, Mich. - In two road meets, the Northwestern swimming and diving teams put up competitive results, posting multiple times good for top 10 in the nation, but came up short in the final scores.
The Wildcats collected five event finishes that earned top-five standings in the Big Ten in their second weekend of the season. Despite the top times, tough opponents left both the men's and women's programs to take their first losses of the season at Notre Dame and Michigan.
The men's efforts were led by Joshua Staples, Oli Kos and Diego Nosack, winning a combined six individual events. On the women's side, Zoe Nordmann set a new personal best in the 1000 free, while Kat Nikonova contributed to two relay victories.
Friday's competition saw the women's team claim both relay events, as well as the top two finishes in the 1000 free, 100 breast, and 50 free individual events. Both the men's and women's free relays at Notre Dame earned impressive Big Ten positions. For the event, the men's time (2:53.18) comes in second, and the women's (3:17.15) takes the fourth fastest time in the conference.
The men's side won five events during Saturday's action, which was full of tight margins and six top-three individual finishes for the women.
"Really proud of the way that our team faced this early-season challenge," director of swimming and diving Rachel Stratton-Mills said. "Racing on back-to-back days against quality competition is tough, but we had some strong performances that we're really excited to build on as the season continues."
Individually, Staples swam a dominant 8:58.35 for the 1000 free event, good for the second-fastest in the Big Ten, and eighth in the country. Nordmann's 1000 free also scored her second in the conference standings, with a 9:45.69 finish. Stuart Seymour's performance in the 100 back (45.92) comes in at No. 4 in the Big Ten.
