Wildcats Drop Exhibition at No. 16 Iowa State, 80-72

AMES, IOWA — In its first action of the 2025-26 season, Northwestern fell short in its comeback attempt at No. 16 Iowa State in an exhibition on Sunday afternoon by a score of 80-72 at Hilton Coliseum.
While the Wildcats cut the Cyclones' lead to four twice in the final six minutes, the Wildcats were unable to get over the hump to regain control of the game. Northwestern led for over 16 minutes of the contest, which featured eight ties and five lead changes.
Senior Nick Martinelli posted a game-high 20 points, converting 7-of-10 field goal attempts, and grabbed four rebounds.
Playing in his first collegiate game, first-year Tre Singleton recorded 14 points, knocking down all six of his free throw attempts. The forward, the Wildcats' highest-ranked recruit in program history, added five rebounds and three assists to his stat line.
Transfer junior Arrinten Page and sophomore Max Green made an instant impact in their first performances at Northwestern. Page notched 10 points and four rebounds, while Green posted 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals off the bench.
Totaling 28 minutes, sophomore Angelo Ciaravino stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, three rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.
Northwestern's first points of the season came from Page converting a free throw. Ultimately, Page would score five of the Wildcats' first 12 points as the team took a 12-6 lead over Iowa State by the under-16 media timeout.
The Cyclones battled back to take the lead, but powered by a 10-2 run, Northwestern tied the contest at 26 with a shade under seven minutes remaining in the first half.
After the back-and-forth battle continued for the following minutes, Green drilled a shot from near half court in the waning seconds of the first half to give the Wildcats a 40-37 lead heading into halftime. At halftime, Northwestern was shooting 15-of-28 (53.6%) from the field and 5-of-12 (41.7%) from beyond the arc.
Midway through the second half, Iowa State seized control of the game and led by as many as 11 points.
Northwestern will play inside Welsh-Ryan Arena for the first time in the 2025-26 season when it hosts Illinois State for an exhibition on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. CT. The game will air on B1G+ and WGN Radio 720.
