WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Northwestern wrestling (2-2, 0-1 B1G) dropped their conference opener to the Purdue Boilermakers (7-1, 1-0 B1G) on Friday night at Holloway Gymnasium, falling 31-13 on the road.
Three 'Cats picked up individual victories in the team setback, headlined by No. 19 Maxx Mayfield, who picked up a 17-2 technical fall at 165 lbs to preserve his perfect record in dual meet action this year.
Mayfield jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a first-period takedown of Purdue's No. 33 Stoney Buell and never looked back. He came close to a pin at the end of the second period, but was limited to four near-fall points before the clock expired. With two more takedowns in the third, Mayfield put away his second consecutive tech fall in dual action.
Mayfield's was the second victory of the night for the 'Cats after Sam Cartella logged a 14-0 major decision against Isaac Ruble at 149 lbs. Cartella also used an early takedown to gain the first advantage in his bout, then stacked it with another takedown, six total nearfall points and the riding time point to put his third dual meet victory of the season in the books. Including tonight's bout, each of Cartella's last seven victories have been shutouts, dating back to the CKLV Invitational on December 6 and 7.
The final victory for Northwestern came at 197 lbs, where No. 13 Evan Bates continued his impressive run through the first half of the season. Bates put away No. 30 Ben Vanadia with a shutout of his own, blanking his opponent 8-0 for a major decision. It was the fourth ranked victory of the season for the red shirt junior.
Looking forward, the 'Cats will continue their weekend road swing on Sunday afternoon, when they are set to take on the No. 11 Fighting Illini in Champaign, Ill. First whistle between the in-state rivals is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT on B1G+.
