How It Happened
Ohio State's vaunted pressure defense made an impact early, forcing four straight Wildcat turnovers as the Buckeyes raced out to a 7-0 lead. Back-to-back buckets from Melannie Daley preceded a deep two from Caileigh Walsh that pulled Northwestern back within one, 7-6. Tayla Thomas provided a lift off the bench, stepping out to hit a triple that cut the gap to seven, 22-15. Northwestern finished the opening frame at just shy of 50 percent from the field, but Ohio State took advantage of 10 Wildcat miscues as it held a 27-17 edge after the opening 10 minutes.
Â
As was the case to open the afternoon, Daley again looked to spark Northwestern to open the second quarter, scoring on consecutive trips to get the 'Cats within 31-21. Walsh went on to convert on a pair of old-fashioned three-point plays as part of a 10-point showing by the senior in the second frame, but Ohio State kept its foot on the gas, with a Cotie McMahon layup in the closing seconds sending the hosts to halftime with a 53-34 lead.
