PARIS — Northwestern will be well represented at the 2024 Summer Olympics hosted in Paris, France. See the full list below with each individual's schedule and how to watch live.
Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah

Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah is competing in the Olympics for the second time in her career for Team Nigeria. A native of Abuja, Nigeria, Kunaiyi-Akpanah made her Olympic debut for Nigeria at Tokyo 2020. The former Wildcat standout racked up multiple accolades during her time at Northwestern, including 2018-19 First Team All-Big Ten honors, as well as being one of two Wildcats in program history to record 1,000 career rebounds. She currently plays professionally in Italy for Campobasso in the Serie A1 League, where she averages 11 points per game.
Kunaiyi-Akpanah and Nigeria will compete in Group B along with Canada, Australia and host France. The twelve teams will be split into three groups of four teams, and a single round-robin will be held within each group. The first- and second-placed teams of each group advance to the quarterfinals as well as the two best third-placed teams. Preliminary matches will occur at Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille, with the final phase staged at the Accor Arena in Paris.
Tracey Fuchs
Field Hockey | USA | Assistant Coach
Northwestern head coach USA Field Hockey Hall of Famer Tracey Fuchs is serving as an assistant coach for Team USA, where she will coach current Wildcats Maddie Zimmer and Ashley Sessa. This will be her first coaching appearance at the Olympics, as she previously coached Team USA in the Pan-American Games, where they won a gold medal. Fuchs is no stranger to the Olympics however, as her illustrious playing career saw her compete in the 1988 and 1996 Games, as well as being a five-time medalist at the Pan-American Games. The winningest coach in Northwestern field hockey history, Fuchs has one of the most impressive resumes in the history of the sport, as she has won national titles as a head coach, assistant coach, and player. On the international stage, Fuchs has earned more than 250 caps, and has racked up numerous individual awards and medals. Fuchs has been the Northwestern head field hockey Coach since 2009.
The twelve teams in the tournament will be divided into two groups of six, with each team initially playing round-robin games within their group. Following the completion of the round-robin stage, the top four teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals.
Maddie Zimmer
Field Hockey | USA | Team USA Bio
Maddie Zimmer will be making her Olympic debut for Team USA. The Hershey, Pa. native has had an impressive career as a Wildcat, as she tallied two NFHCA First-Team All-American honors, as well as earning First Team All-Big Ten three times, NCAA All-Tournament Team and NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player awards during the 'Cats National Championship Season. Zimmer began her World Championship Experience in 2021, as she spent three seasons playing in the FIH Pro League. In addition, Zimmer competed three consecutive years in the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, and helped the U.S. bring home a bronze and silver medal. Most recently, Zimmer led the U.S. to a silver medal in the 2024 FIH Field Hockey Olympic Qualifier in Ranchi, India, and was named player of the match against Italy and New Zealand.

Ashley Sessa
Field Hockey | USA | Team USA Bio
Incoming transfer Ashley Sessa will be joining teammate Maddie Zimmer and coach Tracey Fuchs on the U.S. Olympic Field Hockey Team. The Schwenksville, Pa. native joined the 'Cats after playing her first collegiate season for North Carolina in 2022, where she won a national championship and earned Second-Team All ACC honors. This past year, she took an Olympic redshirt and did not compete for the Tar Heels. Sessa has seen great success on the international stage, and recently recorded her 50th cap on June 6 against Great Britain. Sessa captured her first medal in 2021 at the Junior Pan American Championship in Santiago, Chile, as the U.S. took home bronze. Like Zimmer, Sessa was named player of the match against Japan in the 2024 FIH Field Hockey Olympic Qualifier in Ranchi, India. In addition, she has won two gold medals in her career, coming in the 2023 Junior Pan American Championship and the Indoor Pan American Cup, where she was named Most Valuable Player of the Tournament.

Russell Payne
Soccer | USA | Assistant Coach
Northwestern men's soccer head coach Russell Payne will serve as an assistant coach for Team USA in the Olympic Games for the first time. Previously, Payne served as an assistant coach for the US National Team in the Concacaf Nations League Finals and 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup, as well as being the US National Team's goalkeeper's coach from 2015-17. Payne played professionally as a goalkeeper in Germany, Ireland and Netherlands, and had MLS stints with the New Jersey Metro Stars, Colorado Rapids, and DC United.
The 2024 Summer Olympics football tournament is held at seven stadiums in seven cities in France. The final will be held at Parc des Princes in Paris. Teams participating in the men's competition are restricted to under-23 players (born on or after 1 January 2001) with a maximum of three overage players allowed. The competing countries were divided into four groups of four teams, with the USA competing in Group A. Teams in each group play one another in a round-robin basis, with the top two teams of each group advancing to the quarterfinals.
Sophie Angus
Swimming | Canada | Team Canada Bio
Sophie Angus will be making her Olympic debut for Team Canada, competing in the 100m breaststroke 4x100 medley relay. Angus, a former Northwestern all-american, still holds the school record for 100m breaststroke. In addition to her collegiate success, Angus has made her mark on the international stage. The Canadian first represented her country in 2018 at the short course World Swimming Championships. A year later, Angus competed in the Universiade, where she won bronze in the 4x100 medley relay and placed fifth in the 50m breaststroke. Angus competed for Team Canada at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships, where she swam in the breaststroke leg of both heats to help Canada earn a bronze medal. She would follow up with another strong showing a year later in the 2024 World Aquatics Championships to help Canada capture another bronze medal. In addition, she represented Team Canada at the 2023 Pan American Games where she won silver in the 100m breaststroke, and swim in the heats of the 4x100m medley relay that went on to win gold.
Joe Rau
Greco-Roman Wrestling | USA | Team USA Bio
Former Northwestern wrestling assistant coach Joe Rau will head back to the mat as he will be competing in the Olympics for the first time. Rau punched his ticket to Paris after he defeated Alan Vera, 2-0, in the championship series. He will be competing at 97 kgs in Greco-Roman. Third time was the charm for Rau, as he came extremely close to qualifying in his previous two attempts to do so. A former volunteer assistant who remains involved with the 'Cats, the Chicago native has won two US Open championships (2016, 2019) and won gold at the 2020 Pan American Olympic Qualifier and 2020 Pan American Olympic Championships. Rau wrestled collegiately at Elmhurst College where he finished his career as a two-time CCIW Champion with a career record of 51-16.
Matt Fitzpatrick

Former Wildcat and US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick will be competing in the Olympics for the first time. A member of Team Great Britain, Fitzpatrick is currently ranked 21st by the PGA Tour. Fitzpatrick has been playing professionally since 2014 and joined the PGA Tour in 2020. He has competed in 152 PGA events and compiled two tour wins, three runners up finishes, one third place finish, 14 top five finishes, and 34 top ten finishes. In addition to his lengthy professional career, Fitzpatrick has experience in team golf as well. A three-time Ryder Cup participant (2016, 2020, 2023) with Team Europe, Fitzpatrick also competed in the 2016 Eurasia Cup and 2013 Walker Cup.
Sebastian Rivera
Freestyle Wrestling | Puerto Rico | Olympics Bio
Former Wildcat wrestling standout Sebastian Rivera will be making his Olympic debut for Team Puerto Rico and serve as the nation's flag bearer. Rivera took home two Big Ten titles for the 'Cats, after he defeated Iowa's Spencer Lee in 2019 in the 125 lb. weight class and Penn State's Roman Bravo-Young in the 133 lb. weight class the following year. In addition to his Big Ten titles, Rivera racked up plenty of national and regional accolades, including five All-American honors (four NCAA, one NWCA), becoming the 40th Wildcat wrestler to do so. Rivera qualified for the Olympics after he took home silver at the 2023 World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. A native of Tom's River, New Jersey, Rivera recently took home a bronze medal for Team Puerto Rico this past May at the Pan-American Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In Paris, he will be competing at 65kg in the freestyle.
David Gerchik

Wildcat Swimmer David Gerchik will be representing Israel in the Olympics for the first time. The sophomore will be competing in the 200m Backstroke. He recently swam for Team Israel in the European Swimming Championships this past June, where he brought home a sixth-place finish in the 200 meter backstroke finals. Gerchik enters the Olympics coming off a solid freshman campaign for the 'Cats, and finished the season with a score of 816.05 points via swimcloud.com. In addition, Gerchik competed in the 50 yard backstroke and 100 yard backstroke relays for the Wildcats this past Winter in the Big Ten Championships.
Jaye Patrick
Diving | Latvia | Olympics Bio
Former Wildcat Diving standout Jaye Patrick is making her Olympic debut later this upcoming August, as she will represent Latvia in the upcoming Olympic games. The Solana Beach, California native graduated from Northwestern with a bachelor's degree in communication, as well as a double minor in statistics and business. As a Wildcat, Patrick earned an All-American Honorable Mention in her senior season and qualified for the NCAA Championships on 1-meter and platform a year prior. In addition to her collegiate success, Patrick has experience competing on an international stage. She qualified for the World Aquatic Championships three consecutive years and placed 21st in the 10-meter prelim at the 2024 World Championships in Qatar. She made her World Championships Debut in 2022 in Hungary, when she competed on 1-meter.
Daphne Chan Nok Sze

Incoming first-year Fencer Daphne Chan Nok-Sze will be making her Olympic debut, as she will represent Hong Kong as a foil. A year prior, Nok-Sze took home Hong Kong's first girls gold medal at the Women's Foil Junior World Cup in Thailand. That Hong Kong team went on to win silver at the event. Most recently, she placed 12th in the Zone Championships this past June in Kuwait. In addition, she has competed in events around the world prior to the Olympics, in countries such as China, Georgia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Italy, and Thailand. Ayla Spitz

Recent Northwestern graduate Ayla Spitz will be making her Olympic debut for Israel in the 4x200m Freestyle Relay. In her lone season as a Wildcat after transferring in from Cal, Spitz was a three-time Big Ten finalist, placing second in the 200 Y Back, third in the 500 Y Free, and fifth in the 200 Y Free, respectively. She would go on to compete in the NCAA Championships in six different events. In addition, she has competed internationally, in recent events such as the European Aquatics Championships, World Aquatics Championships, and LEN European U23 Championships. According to swimcloud.com she ranked 65th nationally and 10th in the Big Ten and was the top swimmer on this past year's Northwestern team.

Recent Northwestern graduate Ayla Spitz will be making her Olympic debut for Israel in the 4x200m Freestyle Relay. In her lone season as a Wildcat after transferring in from Cal, Spitz was a three-time Big Ten finalist, placing second in the 200 Y Back, third in the 500 Y Free, and fifth in the 200 Y Free, respectively. She would go on to compete in the NCAA Championships in six different events. In addition, she has competed internationally, in recent events such as the European Aquatics Championships, World Aquatics Championships, and LEN European U23 Championships. According to swimcloud.com she ranked 65th nationally and 10th in the Big Ten and was the top swimmer on this past year's Northwestern team.
