EVANSTON, Ill. — Two of Northwestern University's top student-athletes from the Class of 2024 have received the Big Ten Conference's highest honor. Men's basketball guard Boo Buie and lacrosse Attacker Izzy Scane were named Northwestern's recipients of the Big Ten Medal of Honor at the 2024 NU Club Awards' annual student-athlete showcase.
First awarded in 1915, the Big Ten Medal of Honor is the conference's most prestigious accolade, recognizing one male and one female student-athlete from each university who have achieved the highest levels of proficiency in both athletics and academics. This award was the first of its kind in intercollegiate athletics.
Boo Buie made a significant impact in his final season with the Wildcats, leading the team to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year—a first in program history. Buie excelled on all fronts, averaging 19 points and 5 assists per game, sinking 89 three-pointers, and amassing 93 defensive rebounds and 49 steals. As the defensive anchor, he earned the Lefty Driesell Defensive Player of the Year award, recognizing the top defensive player in Division I basketball.
Over his five-year career, Buie has established himself as one of the best players in program history. A two-time All-Big Ten Selection, and a unanimious selection in 2023-24, he broke Northwestern's all-time games played record with 149 appearances and set a career scoring record with 2,187 points.
Izzy Scane's lacrosse career is marked by numerous accolades and record-breaking achievements. She is a back-to-back Tewaaraton Award and Honda Award winner for lacrosse. Scane led her team to a national championship in 2023 and the Big Ten Tournament Championship in 2024. She set the NCAA Division I record with 376 career goals, including 99 goals in a single season in 2023. In 2024, she led the nation in scoring again with 88 goals and recorded a career-high 35 assists, making her the first player since 2001 to lead the nation in consecutive seasons. Scane also leads Northwestern in career points with 483.
Throughout her career, she earned recognition as a two-time IWLCA Player of the Year (2023 and 2024), a three-time IWLCA First Team All-American (2021, 2023, 2024), and the three-time Big Ten Conference Attacker of the Year (2021, 2023, 2024). Additionally, Scane excelled academically, earning Academic All-Big Ten honors.
