Cai, Nguyen tied for fourth on individual leaderboard
EAST LANSING, Mich. (May 6, 2024) – Paced by strong efforts from Jennifer Cai and Lauryn Nguyen, the Northwestern University women's golf team finds itself in third place following the opening round of the NCAA East Lansing Regional in East Lansing, Mich.

The Wildcats, who are seeded second, posted a four-under-par 284 today at the Forest Akers West Golf Course (par 72; 6,325 yards), a total that has them just a shot back of second-place Pepperdine (283).
USC sits atop the team leaderboard following a first-round seven-under-par 281. The Trojans' Bailey Shoemaker fired a seven-under-par 65 to take the lead in the race for individual medalist honors.
The pairing of Cai and Nguyen led the way for the 'Cats across the opening 18 holes of play in Central Michigan today. Cai got off to a red-hot start, birdying three of her first five holes, en route to a two-under-par 70 that has her tied for fourth place. Right alongside her is Nguyen, who matched Cai with a 70, her team-best 21st round at par or better this season.
Jieni Li and Jiayi Wang reside as part of a tie for 19th after each carded an even-par round of 72. Li caught fire near the turn, birdying three of four holes, while Wang impressed in the first regional round of her collegiate career, posting her third round at par or better across her last four outings. Ashley Yun, who, like Wang, made her regional debut today, handed in a four-over-par 76.
In search of a top-five finish to advance on to the NCAA Women's Golf Championships, Northwestern will begin the second round of the NCAA East Lansing Regional at 7:15 a.m. (CT) on Tuesday morning. The Wildcats will be paired with USC, the region's top seed, and Pepperdine.
