Our Northwestern Women's Soccer family is deeply saddened by the passing of former Wildcat Wendy Scholz. As one of our program's founding members, she left an enduring mark, becoming the first Scholar All-American in program history in 1997. Scholz's program records for saves in a single-game, season, and career still stand today. Her kindness, loyalty, and strong will positively impacted her friends, family, and teammates. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her loved ones at this time.
Marcia McDermott, Northwestern Head Coach (1994-2000): "Wendy was a remarkable person and athlete. She played an instrumental role in building the NU program due to her work ethic and talent on the field, but also her tremendous contribution as a teammate and friend. She combined a fierce intellect and genuine curiosity with a deep well of kindness for all. I was always struck by how independent her thinking was but how willing she was to consider other points of view. She was thoughtful and generous in spirit. A really wonderful person."
Mandy (McLean) Robinson: "There are few people in this world as loyal as Wendy. Once in her inner circle, you were there for life. She had such a quick wit - with an impish and brilliant smile. And her work ethic and toughness were unmatched."
Lisa Byington: "I played with Wendy for two years, and I loved every second of it. She of course was an outstanding goalie, and as a forward on the team, that drove me nuts at practices trying to score on her.
But when I think of Wendy, it's her presence off the field that is so clear to me, even to this day. I think of someone who was always such a picture of confidence in her own skin. During a time in college, when we all are trying to find our way, and Wendy probably did the same, but she just seemed so far advanced in her personal journey than the rest of us.
She was strong. Confident. Kind. To everyone. EVERRRRYONE. An example of discipline.
I can feel her spirit and see that smile so clearly to this day. You are missed."
