CHICAGO – Northwestern's late rally wasn't enough to in a 3-2 loss to UIC at Curtis Granderson Stadium on Tuesday evening.

UIC (28-13) got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning, when Zane Zielinski scored on an RBI double by Kendall Ewell.

Kyle Potthoff (3-4) rebounded to throw three consecutive scoreless innings to keep the Flames lead at 1-0. The Missouri native departed with 4.0 innings pitched, one earned run, two hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.

UIC added on in the fifth inning, doubling its lead when Pambos Nicoloudes scored on a Drew Dickson balk.

The Flames extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Jackson Fisher, scoring Ewell to make it a 3-0 game.

Northwestern (13-27) got on the board when Vince Bianchina slapped a solo shot to right field, his first home run of the 2024 campaign, to trim the UIC lead to 3-1.

In the top of the eighth, Owen McElfatrick cut the Flames lead in half with a solo home run to left field, his third home run in four games and eighth of the season.

The 'Cats put baserunners on first and second in the top of the ninth, needing a run to extend the game, but were unable to push anything across, falling 3-2.

Rigel Verciglio (3-1) earned the win for UIC, tossing two scoreless, hitless innings, walking a pair and fanning a pair. Reece Lawler earned his ninth save of the year, firing a scoreless ninth to close out the game.

Northwestern returns to Big Ten play with a three-game series at Iowa this weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CT on Friday, 2:05 p.m. CT on Saturday, and 1:05 p.m. CT.
