Northwestern Falls 10-7 to Purdue

EVANSTON, Ill. – Purdue used the long ball early and often in route to a 10-7 win over Northwestern on a windy Saturday afternoon at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park.

The Boilermakers (28-15, 10-4 Big Ten) got on the board early with a solo home run on the first pitch of the game by Mike Bolton. Purdue added one run in the second and four in the third to take a 6-0 lead.

Northwestern cut into the lead with an RBI single by Griffin Mills, scoring Griffin Arnone.

A pair of solo home runs by the Boilermakers extended the Purdue lead to 8-1 in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom half of the inning, Owen McElfatrick hit his second home run in as many days to trim the deficit to 8-3.

A two-run blast by Keenan Spence in the top of the seventh extended the Boilermakers lead to 10-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, Preston Knott slugged a solo shot, his sixth home run of the 2024 campaign. 

Later that same inning, Trent Liolios belted a two-run bomb to center, cutting the deficit to 10-6. In the bottom of the eighth, Preston Knott singled through the right side, scoring Griffin Mills to trim the gap to three, before Purdue closed the game out in the ninth.

Luke Wagner (7-0) is credited with the win for Purdue, allowing three runs on five hits in 5.0 innings of work.

Luke Benneche (1-3) took the loss, surrendering six runs on eight hits, striking out a pair in 3.0 innings pitched.

  • Griffin Mills recorded a career-high three hits, scoring a run and driving in one run.
  • Owen McElfatrick hit his second home run in as many days.
    • McElfatrick's home run marked his seventh of the 2024 campaign.
  • Peter Michael tossed two scoreless innings, striking out four batters.
