UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - No. 34 Northwestern wrapped up their regular season this weekend with a split on the road, falling 4-1 to No. 15 Ohio State on Friday before downing Penn State 4-2 on Sunday.
With those matches in the books, the 'Cats (17-6) will head into the postseason at 9-2 in conference play, with losses to only Ohio State and No. 35 Illinois. That places them third in the Big Ten, good for a double-bye in the upcoming conference tournament, which begins Wednesday.
While Northwestern couldn't pull off the upset against the Buckeyes (17-6, 10-1 B1G), they did take the doubles point behind victories from Sydney Pratt and Neena Feldman at #2 (6-3) and Britany Lau and Maria Shusharina at #3 (6-4). Ohio State claimed the first four singles matches to clinch the victory, but Northwestern was leading on the remaining two courts, which went unfinished. Christina Hand was knotted at 4-4 in the second set after taking the first 6-1 at the #3 position, while Kiley Rabjohns followed up a 7-6 (7-3) tiebreak victory in set one with a 2-1 lead early in set two.
The 'Cats claimed the first lead of the match against Penn State (5-16, 4-7 B1G) as well. Lau and Shusharina logged their second victory of the weekend (6-2) and No. 55 Christina Hand and Justine Leong came out on top of a tiebreak 7-6 (7-3) to secure the point.
In singles play, Northwestern got victories from Leong, Pratt and Lau. Leong won her first set 6-3 and was leading 5-2 in the second before ultimately winning by opponent retirement. At #4, Pratt put up a dominant 6-1 set one, then sealed up the victory with a 7-5 win in set two. Finally, Lau won 7-5, 6-2 at #6 singles to give the 'Cats their fourth point, securing a 4-2 win over the Nittany Lions.
With regular season play behind them, Northwestern will look forward to the Big Ten Tournament, set to begin Wednesday in Ann Arbor. Their victory over Penn State secured the three seed for the 'Cats, earning them a double-bye. The 'Cats will return to the courts on Friday afternoon, when they'll take on six-seed Maryland, 11-seed Nebraska or 14-seed Indiana. That match is set to begin at 1 p.m. CT.
