Men's Tennis Tops Chicago State, Splits Doubleheader

EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 60 Northwestern closed out their doubleheader with a victory over Chicago State at Combe Tennis Center Sunday evening, downing the Cougars by a final score of 4-0. The win made it a split for the 'Cats, who fell 5-2 to No. 18 Michigan State in the first half of the day's action.
Northwestern (7-14, 1-3 B1G) came out of the gate ready on Sunday morning, taking the doubles point from the Spartans (18-3, 4-0 B1G) with a pair of ranked victories. Greyson Casey and Presley Thieneman took down No. 68 Ronald Hohmann and Sebastien Collard 6-3, then Gleb Blekher and Felix Nordby closed the deal with a 6-3 defeat of No. 3 Ozan Baris and Max Sheldon.
The singles round also featured a handful of closely contested matches. Both Thieneman and Bleker lost tiebreaks in their first sets at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, while Nordby dropped a tight 7-4 decision in his. Thieneman followed up by beating No. 11 Baris 7-5 in set two, sending the match to a super tiebreak, which he dropped narrowly, 10-8. Nordby also picked up a win in his second set to send his match to a super tiebreak as well. He came out on top of his, however, securing a 10-8 win to grab the second of Northwestern's two points on the day.
In the nightcap, the 'Cats once again secured the match's first score. Blekher and Nordby won their second match of the day as a duo, 6-4, to add to a 6-0 win by Chad Miller and Saiprakash Goli.
The dominance continued in singles action for the 'Cats, who clinched the match with three straight victories. Miller accounted for the first with a decisive 6-1, 6-2 win in straight sets. He was followed by Goli, who won 6-0, 6-3 in his first match of the season at the number two position. Max Bengtsson provided the final push for Northwestern, securing a 6-4, 6-1 victory in his first singles action of the season.
Next up for the Wildcats is a road swing at Wisconsin and Nebraska this weekend. They'll face off with the Badgers in Madison on Friday at 4 p.m. CT, then take on the Huskers at noon CT on Sunday.
