DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Northwestern Baseball swept Saturday's doubleheader to claim a series sweep over Bethune-Cookman, its first three-game series sweep since April 5, 2019 - April 7, 2019 at Ohio State.

Game One
Bethune-Cookman took an early lead in Saturday's game one, scoring one run in each of the first two innings to claim a 2-0 lead. Northwestern responded in the fifth inning when Lorenzo Rios scored on a double steal to cut the lead in half.

Northwestern exploded for four runs in the sixth inning to take a 5-2 lead. NU tied the game when Trent Liolios doubled home Griffin Arnone. Next batter, Owen McElfatrick slugged his second home run of the season to left field to put Northwestern up 4-2. After Jackson Freeman singled with two outs and nobody on, the game was halted for a brief weather delay. When the game resumed, Tony Livermore plated Freeman to extend the NU lead to 5-2 heading into the bottom half of the sixth.

BCU responded with one run in the bottom half of the sixth to cut the lead to 5-3 and two runs in the bottom half of the ninth to force extra innings.

The Northwestern offense broke the game open in the top of the 10th inning with five runs of its own to take a 10-5 lead. Bennett Markinson put NU back on top with an RBI fielder's choice to plate Liolios. Next batter, Jackson Freeman belted his first career home run to right field to score Markinson, giving NU an 8-5 advantage. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Vince Bianchina drove home two runs to give Northwestern a five-run cushion.

Luke Benneche got the start for NU, allowing three runs over five innings, surrendering four hits and two walks.

Drew Dickson (1-0) earned the win for Northwestern, conceding two runs on five hits, walking one, and fanning four batters in five innings of work. Game Two
Tony Livermore got Northwestern on the scoreboard with an RBI bunt single, driving home Bennett Markinson to give NU a 1-0 advantage. In his first career at bat, Joshua Ramos plated Griffin Mills to double the Northwestern lead.

Bethune-Cookman got one back in the bottom half of the third inning, but Northwestern responded with three runs in the top of the fourth. Livermore's sacrifice fly brought Freeman home to extend the NU lead. Griffin Arnone's ground-rule double scored Griffin Mills to add another run. Bianchina's sacrifice fly plated Ramos, extending the NU lead to 5-1.

BCU chipped away at the lead with one run in the sixth, trimming the Northwestern advantage to 5-2. NU responded immediately, as McElfatrick's double scored Griffin Arnone to push NU's lead back to four.

In the bottom of the eighth, BCU scored a pair to cut into the deficit again, before NU added on two more of its own in the top of the ninth. McElfatrick's single brought Arnone around to score, and one batter later, Markinson plated McElfatrick with an RBI double to re-extend its lead.

Kyle Potthoff (1-0) was credited with the win for NU, allowing one run on six hits in five innings of action, striking out three. Amar Tsengeg surrendered one run on two hits in 1.2 innings pitched, striking out two and walking two batters. Jack Dyke closed the game's final 2.1 innings out, allowing two runs on four hits, walking three and striking out one.
