Scane Scores 7, Leads 'Cats to B1G Victory Over Johns Hopkins

Evanston, Ill. – On Saturday afternoon, top-ranked Northwestern (8-1) won their fourth in a row at home and seventh consecutive game in their Big Ten opener, defeating No. 12 Johns Hopkins (7-3) 14-9 at Ryan Fieldhouse. The Wildcats were led by Izzy Scane (7 goals and 1 assist on a team-high 9 shots), Madison Taylor (4 goals and 3 assists) and Erin Coykendall (2 goals and 2 assists). Taylor (9), Madi Smith (4), the reigning B1G Freshman of the Week, and Samantha Smith (3) led the team in draw controls.
Scane scored a hat trick within the first five minutes of the game, accounting for the first three goals of the game. Madison Taylor then scored the next two, putting Northwestern up 5-0. Scane scored her fourth of the first quarter and the Wildcats were comfortably up 6-1 by the end of the first quarter. The Blue Jays battled back in the second quarter, winning the frame 4-2. JHU's leading scorer in the first half was Ava Angello with two goals. Northwestern led at halftime, 8-5. The scoring slowed down in the third quarter with the 'Cats scoring the only two goals of the frame, one from Scane and one from Taylor. NU and JHU split the final quarter 4-4. NU outshot their opponents 37-29 and won the draw control battle 16-11.
Northwestern will play their second B1G matchup on the road at Penn State on Friday, March 22. Faceoff against the Nittany Lions is at 7:00 p.m. CT. The game will air on Big Ten Network.
