EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 45 Northwestern women's tennis will return to action this weekend as they open their Big Ten season at home against No. 75 Rutgers and No. 49 Maryland. The 'Cats will face the Scarlet Knights on Saturday and the Terrapins on Sunday, with both matches set to begin at noon in Combe Tennis Center.
Northwestern (9-4, 0-0 B1G) wrapped up non-conference play two weeks ago with a 4-1 defeat of No. 48 Memphis. The victory kept their perfect home record intact, at 6-0. Of the 'Cats' four losses so far this year, three have come to teams ranked in the ITA's Top 25.
First up on the weekend slate, Rutgers (9-3, 0-1 B1G) will arrive in Evanston on a two-game win streak after most recently defeating UIC 4-3 on Thursday. In their conference opener, the Scarlet Knights fell 4-3 to Purdue at home. They'll bring the ITA's number 58 ranked doubles pair in the duo of Amira Badawi and Mai Nguyen.
Sunday's opponent, Maryland, holds a 9-5 record, including a 1-0 mark so far in the Big Ten. Boosted by the ITA's No. 77 singles player and No. 64 doubles duo, the Terps have won five straight heading into the weekend. The run included a 4-3 victory over Nebraska last weekend in Lincoln. Before facing the 'Cats, Maryland will continue conference action on Friday afternoon against Illinois in Champaign.
The Wildcats themselves moved up to No. 45 in the most recent ITA poll. Justine Leong still sits at No. 104 in the singles rankings, while the duo of Leong and Christina Hand rank 48th.
This weekend's matches begin an 11-match conference schedule for the 'Cats. Next up after Sunday's action, Northwestern will prepare to face both Nebraska and Iowa on the road next Friday and Sunday.
