‘Cats Begin Homestand Friday Night Against Purdue

Northwestern begins stretch of four straight home duals to close regular season
EVANSTON, Ill. (February 8, 2024) – Northwestern wrestling (0-6, 0-5 B1G) opens a four-dual homestand to close the 2023-24 regular season on Friday evening when it entertains Purdue inside Welsh-Ryan Arena. First whistle between the Wildcats and Boilermakers is slated for 7 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
Northwestern dropped a pair of matchups on the road last week, falling to Wisconsin, 30-12, and No. 10 Minnesota, 39-0.
Trevor Chumbley (157 pounds), Evan Bates (197 pounds), and Jack Jessen (285 pounds) all posted victories against the Badgers. Chumbley tallied his third win by technical fall of the season, rolling to a 20-5 rout of Cody Goebel. Bates scored his first Big Ten dual win of the year in a 9-2 decision over Josh Otto, while Jessen followed suit, rolling to an 11-1 major decision against Gannon Rosenfeld for his first league victory.
SCOUTING PURDUE
Purdue arrives in Evanston sitting at 5-8 overall and 0-5 against Big Ten Conference opposition. In their most recent action, the Boilermakers were defeated by Wisconsin, 24-15, last Sunday in Madison, Wis.
Former Wildcat assistant coach Tony Ersland is in his 10th season leading the Purdue program. The Boilermakers boast the nation's top wrestler at 125 pounds in Matt Ramos, the national runner-up at last season's NCAA Championships. Currently sitting at 20-4 on the year, Ramos is 10-1 in dual action and 7-1 against Big Ten opponents.
Ersland's team also features ranked competitors in No. 20 Joey Blaze (157 pounds), No. 32 Greyson Clark (141 pounds), No. 32 Stoney Buell (165 pounds), and No. 32 Brody Baumann (174 pounds).
SERIES STUFF
Northwestern and Purdue will battle for the 94th time on Friday evening, a series the Boilermakers lead, 47-44-2 (.511).
When the two teams battled last season on February 12, 2023, the 'Cats piled up five bonus-point victories and owned a dominant 26-1 edge in takedowns en route to a 30-12 win over the Boilermakers at Holloway Gymnasium.
