Nguyen, Li earn share of 12th to lead Northwestern
MELBOURNE, Fla. (February 21, 2024) – For the second time in as many events, the Northwestern University women's golf team turned in an impressive final-round showing, surging to a third-place finish at the Moon Golf Invitational in Melbourne, Fla. The 'Cats have recorded top-three finishes at four events in 2023-24.
Spurred on a final-round 286, Northwestern closed play at the par-72, 6,503-yard Classic Course at the Suntree Country Club with a 54-hole team score of 869 (291-292-286) that saw it edge Vanderbilt (295-295-280=870) by a stroke for third. LSU (283-290-277=850) finished atop the team standings, while Maisie Filler (Florida) turned in a nine-under-par 207 (66-69-72) to claim individual medalist honors.
The pairing of Lauryn Nguyen and Jieni Li led Northwestern on the individual leaderboard, finishing as part of a tie for 12th place with even-par 216s. Nguyen (69-72-75) owned the low 18-hole tally of the event by a Wildcat, firing a three-under-par 69 in Saturday's opening round that included four birdies. The Seattle, Wash. native now has six rounds in the 60s to her name in 2023-24. Li (73-71-72) put up her ninth round at par or better during second-round action, carding a one-under-par 71 ahead of an even-par 72 on Tuesday. Out of Hangzhou, China, Li put an exclamation point on her final round with an eagle on the 515-yard, par-five 18th hole.
Jennifer Cai recorded three consecutive rounds of 74 en route to finishing as part of a tie for 39th at 222 (74-74-74).
Dianna Lee and Ashley Yun helped lead Northwestern's final-round charge up the team standings on Tuesday, both handing in final-round two-under-par 70s. Lee racked up a team-best five birdies across her final 18 holes to ascend into a tie for 39th, alongside Cai, with a 222 (77-75-70). Yun played bogey-free golf to close her stay in The Sunshine State, tallying a pair of birdies on Tuesday to earn a share of 44th at 223 (75-78-70).
