Wrestling Opens 2024-25 Season at Michigan State Open

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern wrestling kicks off its 2024-2025 season on Saturday when it heads to East Lansing, Mich. for the Michigan State Open.
Matches inside Michigan State's Jenison Field House are scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. CT, with action in both the open division and freshman/sophomore division.
THE FIELD
Northwestern will have the opportunity to match up against four Big Ten Conference opponents, with host Michigan State, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin among the competing programs. Central Michigan, Edinboro, Kent State, Northern Illinois, and Ohio will make up the rest of the 10-team field.
2024-2025 PREVIEW
This weekend's event marks the beginning of Matt Storniolo's 10th season as head coach in Evanston. He welcomes back three student-athletes who qualified for last season's NCAA Championships in Trevor Chumbley, Maxx Mayfield, and Evan Bates. Chumbley (8th; 157 pounds) and Bates (8th; 197) both posted podium finishes at the Big Ten Championships.
That group accounts for three of five total wrestlers on the 'Cats' roster who enter the 2024-25 season ranked by InterMat. Bates sits 24th at 197, while Mayfield ranks 17th at 165 and Chumbley checked in at 12th in the most recent rankings. Rounding out the group is Sam Cartella, ranking 20th in InterMat's 149-pound rankings, and Chris Cannon, who makes his return to Northwestern and enters action on Saturday ranked 10th.
