Walsh leads ‘Cats with 13 points

EVANSTON, Ill. (November 23, 2024) – Harvard (6-1) held Northwestern (1-3) to just 35 percent shooting and forced 18 turnovers as it dealt the Wildcats a 75-50 defeat this afternoon inside Welsh-Ryan Arena.

How It Happened
Northwestern looked to get off to a quick start, as a Grace Sullivan fast break bucket staked the 'Cats to a 4-2 edge with four minutes gone.  The Wildcats would hold the visitors without a make from the field for a 4:25 span during the opening frame, a drought that was broken by an Elena Rodriguez triple that put the Crimson on top, 7-4.  Casey Harter and Xamiya Walton connected from beyond the arc on consecutive trips, with the latter's trey pulling the 'Cats within two, 14-12, as Harvard went on to hold a 16-13 edge at the end of the first quarter.

After seeing Harvard build a nine-point lead, 26-17, with 6:08 remaining in the first half, Harter drilled her second three of the day to trim the gap to six, 28-22.  Following two Caileigh Walsh makes at the charity stripe, the Crimson used a 10-0 run to create separation, ultimately taking a 42-26 lead into the break.

Northwestern continued to battle in the second half.  Back-to-back scores by Walsh closed the margin to 48-38, before Taylor Williams muscled up an attempt inside to get the 'Cats back within single digits, 48-40, just past the midway point of the third quarter.

Harvard answered back with seven unanswered points, establishing a 55-40 advantage on the way to securing its third road win of the season.
