EVANSTON, Ill. (October 15, 2024) – Natalie Shearer swept the sabre events, highlighting an impressive showing by the Northwestern University women's fencing team over the week at the Remenyik ROC/RJCC inside Ryan Fieldhouse. In total, the 'Cats collected four event titles and totaled 18 podium finishes.
Â
Shearer got off to a fast start on Saturday in the junior women's sabre, breezing through her five pool bouts ahead of an unblemished 5-0 run through the tableau en route to the event title. She was joined on the podium by Alex Chen (T-3rd) and Amy Lu (5th).
Â
Shearer returned to the strips on Sunday afternoon for the Division I women's sabre. After finishing 4-1 in pool action, the Lake Forest, Calif. native knocked off four higher-seeded foes in the tableau to complete her sweep of the weapon. Led by Shearer's effort, five Wildcats earned podium finishes in the event, a quintet that also included Kira Erikson (2nd), Adele Bois (T-3rd), Megumi Oishi (T-3rd), and Nisha Hild (7th).
Â
Reigning Central Collegiate Fencing Conference (CCFC) Epee Champion Karen Wang looked to pick up right where she left off last season in winning the Division I women's epee. Wang was perfect in both pool action and the tableau on her way to topping the podium. Athina Kwon earned a runner-up finish in the event, while Amanda Pirkowski earned a share of third place in her Wildcat debut, finishing alongside Anna Damratoski.
Â
Northwestern was also represented on the podium in the junior women's epee. Christina Liu tied for sixth, while Emma Ning placed eighth.
Â
Fresh off an appearance in the Paris 2024 Olympics, Daphne Chan Nok Sze dazzled as she finished with an unblemished 11-0 head-to-head mark on the way to winning the Division I women's foil. Yukari Takamizawa brought home second place in both the Division I and junior sections of the weapon, while Yejine Lee (7th) joined Chan Nok Sze and Takamizawa on the podium.
